Mutual Defense Agreement India

The signing of the agreement comes at a time when India is caught up in a bitter border dispute with China and countries in the region are increasingly concerned about China`s persuasive power in the Indo-Pacific region. Shortly after the signing of the logistics memorandum on August 29, Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters that the agreement would allow the Indian and U.S. navies to cooperate more smoothly in delivering humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters. After years of negotiations, India and Japan have reached a pioneering agreement allowing their military personnel access to the other side`s bases for logistical support, an important development that is part of a growing concern about the dissociation of China`s military muscles in the region. India has already signed similar agreements with the United States, France and Singapore. The United States of course has similar logistical agreements with other countries, but for Washington and New Delhi, the agreement is particularly important. The two countries do not have a common defence treaty. Yet in recent years, they have tightened thanks to military training and arms trafficking. The memorandum deepens and formalizes these links.

In a statement from Japan`s Foreign Ministry, he said the agreement would promote closer cooperation between the two countries` military and allow them to actively contribute to international peace and security. But perhaps we can observe the main developments at sea. During a visit to India in April, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter discussed the possibility of sharing the technology with Indian engineers while developing their new domesticly produced INS Vishal aircraft carrier. New Delhi wants Vishal to run on nuclear power – and hopes to complete the ship as early as 2028. Return to the list of contracts by theme, type of contract, year and/or country As mentioned above, it marks above all the strengthening of mutual trust and commitment to long-term strategic relations. With these important defence pacts, cooperation between the United States and India can be done in a more structured and effective way, not through episodic epidemics. “The agreement provides the framework for closer cooperation between the armed forces of India and Japan on the reciprocal provision of supplies and services,” he said. The decisive element behind LEMOA is mutual trust. Without confidence, no country will be prepared to suspend its military and strategic assets, such as warships, at another country`s facilities. India plays a crucial role in achieving our common vision of a free and open space for Indo-Pacific. In collaboration with inter-institutional partners, the Office of Political and Military Affairs (MP) promotes U.S.-India relations in the defence trade and in a broader security partnership.

India and the United States on Tuesday (October 27th) signed the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA), which, together with the two agreements previously signed – the Logistics Exchange Agreement (LEMOA) and the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) – a troika of “founding pacts” for deep military cooperation between the two countries. India`s initial relations with the Soviet Union after the former`s independence were ambivalent and were guided by Nehru`s decision to remain without an alliance and his government`s active role in the Commonwealth of Nations.
